Goal
The goal of a newborn session is to have a fun, relaxed time capturing a range of special photographs. Ideally we will produce some awake images and some peaceful, sleeping images that capture your newborn in that precious, short-lived curl position.
The goal of a session for older kids is to photograph them having fun and being themselves: sitting up and smiling from 6-8 months, and getting them in a rare, still moment at 1+ years. We aim for and deliver photos full of your child’s spunk and personality.
Within two weeks of your session, you will have 20-25 images to choose from (all available in either black and white or color). Typically, we focus on the baby, but we also photograph Mom and Dad with the baby. For more information on pricing, see “Pricing.”
Timing
The best time to photograph a newborn is within the first two weeks of birth. We recommend that you schedule your session well in advance, based on your due date and then tweak the timing if the birth falls early or late. Photographing in the first two weeks of life enables us to achieve those great “curled” poses, take advantage of this very calm and sleepy stage of your child and beat the onset of baby acne which we would all like to avoid!
Location
Sessions are held in our Chelsea studio with natural and artificial lighting options, as well as a variety of backdrops and props. Alternatively, for an additional fee, you may elect to have the session in the comfort of your own home or travel to another location.
What to expect
Expect a relaxed session which moves at your / your child’s pace. There will be more calming, feeding and changing time with a newborn than shooting time, but that is all part of the process. Creating images that you will love forever depends on everyone going with the flow and working with the child’s temperament and needs. Sessions last between two and three hours.
We tend to favor very simple clothing for moms, dads and children in solid colors, particularly blacks and greys. Textures always photograph well: knits for winter, fun hats, ribbed cotton. If there is a special outfit, blanket or other item that you think reflects your child’s personality and will “make” the shots — by all means, bring them!
We will talk about the session on the phone prior to your sitting so that we are acquainted with any specific requests you have and so that you are comfortable with the process and excited for what’s ahead.
